The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology of PKU-SS, one of the largest at home and abroad, was established in 1948. Professor Fu Kaiyuan is the head of the department, and Professor Zhao Yanping and Professor Li Gang  are the deputy heads.

During more than 70 years history, the department has made remarkable achievements in health care, teaching and research, and won a great academic reputation in the field of oral and maxillofacial radiology. Professor Zou Zhaoju, the founder and the pioneer of oral and maxillofacial radiology in China, trained the first candidate of PhD since the establishment of people's republic of china who graduated in 1984. She also founded the Group of Oral Radiology under the Chinese Medical Association in 1987. In 2000, Professor Ma Xuchen presided over the establishment of the Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology under the Chinese Stomatological Association, and served as the chairman of the first and second committees. In 2007, Professor Ma, then the chairman of the International Association of Dento-Maxillo-Facial Radiology, convened the 16th International Congress of Dento-Maxillo-Facial Radiology in Beijing.

Our department is the standardized training base for residents and the degree conferring department for master's and doctor's degree in oral and maxillofacial radiology. So far, we have trained more than 90 Master/PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, published more than 500 papers, including more than 150 in the international peer-reviewed journals, and edited 21 monographs. Oral and maxillofacial medical imaging, issued under Professor Ma's general editorship, had been awarded national and Beijing top-quality course (2008) and Beijing top-quality teaching material (2013).

Our department has 33 faculty members including 11 doctors, 15 technicians, 5 nurses and 3 assistants. Besides, the department is equipped with the fully facilities, including 1 GE spiral CT unit, 4 cone beam CT units, 1 500mA digital X-ray machine, 1 500mA computed radiographic machine, 4 panoramic X-ray machines, 8 dental X-ray machines, 1 color ultrasonic device and 1 sialendoscopic system. In 2018, there were more than 300,000 patients visiting for oral and maxillofacial radiography in our department.
