The history of Department of Prosthodontics can be traced back to 1941. In 1954, the department was formally established. In 1984, Doctorate Program of the department was approved by the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council. Being one of the first national doctorate authorization disciplines, and one crucial component of the National key discipline of Stomatology (First-Tier Discipline), Department of Prosthodontics had many famous names in its history, such as Mao Xiejun (the initiator of education concept from dentistry to stomatology in China), Zhu Xitao (the initiator of oral biomechanics in China), Wang Yuying (one of the founder of occlusion, oral physiology), etc. to mention only a few of the Professors.

Being one of the top-level and leading Prosthodontic Departments in China, the Department of Prosthodontics has built on its reputation in Prosthodontic education, and patient care with the up-to-date dental science and technology, and also creates a team that is very strong in research fields. From 2011 the department has been designated by Ministry of Health as National Key Clinical Specialty for its leading role in China and for its excellence in patient care, teaching, and researches.

In 2018, the International Team for Implantology (ITI) Scholarship Center (one of the first two ITI centers in China) was founded in our hospital and based in Department of Prosthodontics, Implantology Center, etc. In September of 2019, the first international scholar started his training program in the center. Scholars also have access to other departments representing the various specialties involved in implant dentistry. The whole department is ready to play important role in the training of international scholars and more communication and cooperation with international academics.

The Department of Prosthodontics consists of nearly 80 faculty members and staff. The Department plays active leadership roles in Chinese Prosthodontic Society, Chinese Society for Maxillofacial Rehabilitation, Chinese Society for Oral Esthetics, Chinese Society of Digital Stomatology, Chinese Society of Dental Technology, and National Board of Stomatological Examiners (Prosthodontic group). We are engaged in the integration of emerging technologies into our clinical, educational, and academic missions. We are well recognized for our clinical training programs, and have integrated innovative education into our collegial, postgraduate, and advanced training programs.

The experts of the department also contribute their work to many international and Chinese peer-reviewed journals and provide excellent services or supports to many academic associations such as International College of Prosthodontists (ICP), Asian Academy of Prosthodontics (AAP), and so on. The department is active in domestic and international collaboration and will seek more cooperation internationally. Since the establishment of the department, the faculty have created many innovative achievements and made outstanding contributions which facilitate the development of prosthodontic discipline in China.

The Department is active in both clinical and bio-prosthodontic researches, with grant supports from national , ministry , university levels. Collaborative efforts are extensive, and comprehensive research directions include: 1) the Prosthodontic sciences and technology; 2) digital stomatology; 3) applied dental materials, biomaterials, and interfaces ; 4) tissue regeneration and tissue engineering ; 5) etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of hypodontia / oligodontia ; 6) oral physiology, occlusion, TMD and orofacial pain ; 7) dental esthetics ; 8) dental implants , 9) other multi/inter-disciplinary researches, and Prosthodontic education.

Department of Prosthodontics has been working actively with National Engineering Laboratory for Digital and Material Technology of Stomatololgy in developing prosthetic digital technology and materials with independent intellectual property rights, contributing innovations to developments of up-to-date technology and materials in Prosthodontic field.

The mission of the department is always to improve and advance people's quality of life, and didactic quality for students through its excellence in patient care, education, and research in prosthodontic field. We hope to collaborate with all academic, professional, and enterprise colleagues, domestic and international, for the prospective future of the prosthodontic discipline.
