1. General information

Department of Orthodontics, Peking University School of Stomatology, is a professional department with specialty in orthodontic clinical practice and related-research. It was founded by Professor MAO Xiejun, a pioneer in Chinese orthodontic specialty in 1949 and became the first orthodontic clinic in China. Orthodontic department was established in 1977 with the approval of Ministry of Health. Then under the leadership of Professors HUANG JinFang and FU MinKui, the former chairpersons of the department, the department has become a premier orthodontic center in China after decades of development. Currently, Department of Orthodontics, Peking University School of Stomatology is National Key Discipline and unit for National Elite Course Project. Department of Orthodontics, with first-class facilities, provides orthodontic treatment with a variety of techniques. Each technique has its own characteristics and advantages. Department of Orthodontics inherits and develops all kinds of classical and advanced technology, including functional appliance, classical edgewise technique, Begg technique, straight-wire technique, Tip-edge technique, MBT sliding straight wire technique, multi-loops edgewise technique, Alexander technique, lingual orthodontics and invisible techniques, etc. The level of treatment outcome is confirmed to be the top in China. 93% of orthodontists in Department of Orthodontic hold doctoral degree, and 60% of them have one-year or more overseas study background. Department of Orthodontics, Peking University School of Stomatology is the chief-editor unit for state-compiled textbooks and president unit for Chinese Orthodontic Society (the 1st-4th and 6th). With all-round development and proficiency in both research and practical skills, Department of Orthodontics, Peking University School of Stomatology is highly recognized in the field of Chinese orthodontics and has achieved renowned reputation globally.

(1) Comprehensive Orthodontic Treatment

 Surgical Orthodontics

Orthodontic Treatment in Sequence Treatment of Cleft Lip and Palate

Orthodontic treatment is an important part in the sequence treatment of Cleft Lip and Palate. It plays a critical role for the patients with cleft lip and palate to achieve ideal maxillofacial morphology and good function of stomatognathic system. Department of Orthodontics, Peking University School of Stomatology is a leading role in advocating sequence treatment of Cleft Lip and Palate. With a well-established interdisciplinary treatment team, the experts from Department of Orthodontics addressed a wide range of treatment approach for patients with cleft lip and palate with promising treatment effects.

(3) Adjunctive Treatment for Adults

Orthodontic treatment for patients with periodontal diseases

In recent years, adult orthodontic treatment has been paid increasingly attention. In-depth collaboration between Department of Orthodontics and Department of Periodontics allows the indications for orthodontic treatment to the patients with periodontal disease be extended and thus achieve favorable treatment outcome.

Orthodontic treatment in patients with TMD

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) is a common disease in oral medicine. Some kinds of malocclusion are related with TMD. Long-term cooperative relationship between Department of orthodontic and Center for TMD & Orofacial Pain has been established, which is of great benefit to patients obtain better treatment results.

(4) Invisible and Esthetics Orthodontics

Lingual orthodontics

Typical feature of Lingual orthodontics is that the appliance on the lingual surface of tooth. Treatment with lingual orthodontics requires high technical experience, relatively longer treatment duration and higher cost. But it is still a good choice for adults with particular treatment motivation and demands due to its esthetics characteristics.

  Invisible orthodontics

Invisible orthodontics is to use three-dimensional digital technology and 3D printing technology,  and according to the target of teeth movement, to produce a series of aligners and gradually move teeth to the aimed position and then correct malocclusion.

(5) Orthodontic Treatment in Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS), in a popular term" snoring", is a disease with high incidence and potentially to be fatal threat to human health. Orthodontic treatment of obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome was first to be carried out in Department of orthodontics, Peking University School of Stomatology, and it has achieved promising treatment effects after years of accumulation of clinical experience.

4. Significant research achievements

Prof. MAO Xiejun, the founder of Department of Orthodontics, Peking University of Stomatology, proposed MAO's Malocclusion Classification, invented HuanTuo Appliance. Prof. FU Minkui introduced cephalometric analysis and Edgewise appliance into the field of Chinese orthodontics, thus leading Chinese Orthodontics connected with overseas. In recent years, original orthodontic technology patents from Department of Orthodontics are emerging, including Low Force, Low Friction Technique, Transmission Adjustable Straight-wire Technique, Z2 Straight-wire Technique, Mini-screw Anchorage Technique and Physiologic Anchorage Spee-wire System. All of these original techniques, philosophy and research achievements have been reported and presented on national and international conferences and attracted worldwide attention. With a highly skilled and knowledgeable team of faculties in Department of Orthodontics, the department is never cease to forge ahead and strive for excellence. Prof. LIN Jiuxiang's pioneering achievements in Non-surgical Orthodontics Treatment in Severe Skeletal Class III Malocclusion has been listed in One Hundred Promotion Technologies within Ten Years authorized by National Health and Family Planning Commission of PRC. Since the foundation of the department, research achievements have been granted for more than 50 awards, including National Science and Technology Conference Award, Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, National Science and Technology Award Beijing Science and Technology Award, Progress Award for Science and Technology, etc.  Department of Orthodontics has been actively involved in the cooperation with the colleagues from other dental schools in China as well as abroad and eventually has established with them long-term and friendly relationships. Department of Orthodontics, Peking University of Stomatology is making great efforts to approach first-rate discipline globally.
